"Where History Comes Alive"

US Territorial Capital

200 Hyder Hill Rd
Piney Flats, Tennessee

When William Cobb arrived with his family in the western frontier of  North Carolina in 1769, he did not realize that his new home would  play such an important role in shaping the future of our country.  Passing through the door of William Cobb's home, visitors step back in time to the year 1791.  George Washington is President of the United States and has appointed William Blount as Governor of the Southwest Territory.  Governor Blount has taken up residence at Rocky Mount to conduct the business affairs of the new territory.  The tour experience invites one to become part of the happenings of the year 1791 through the first person interpretation of daily lifestyles, domestic and work skills, food, clothing, furnishings and games.  Rocky Mount also offers a variety of special events, educational programs, and meeting facilities.

Mr. Jones’ most recent book “Before They Were Heroes at King’s Mountain”  tells not only the events immediately leading to the victory at King’s Mountain in October 1780 but tells of the six or more years of preparation for ‘the shirtmen’ in countless skirmishes with the native populations and Tories.  Randell refers to them as the “ghost legions” of backwoods militiamen that would surely turn the tide of the war in the South and the history of our fledgling nation that day in October 1780 at a place called King’s Mountain.

A Candlelight Christmas: Now Taking Reservations
Friday, Saturday: Dec 2,3,9,10; Tours begin at 4:30

The Cobb family invites you to their home to celebrate their traditional Christmas Eve of 1791, a simple but heartfelt celebration, before today's commercialization of the holiday season.  The site will be fully lit with candles  as visitors are led from building to building by lantern guides, starting at the Cobb Home, where they are greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Cobb.  1791 was an important Christmas for the Cobb family; Gov. William Blount had just returned from North Carolina, with his wife and children.  A visit to the dining room comes next, decorated in traditional greenery and fruit.  There is always a shindig in the kitchen, now that the work of preparing for Christmas Eve is complete. Christmas isn't complete without a visit to the servant's quarters  where heartwarming stories capture the season.  The visit concludes with a modern reception in the visitor center.

Tours leave the visitor center every fifteen minutes beginning at 4:30.  Reservations are highly recommended (but not required).  Call M-F 9-5 at (423) 538-7396 or (888) 538-1791 for reservations and for more information.
