Rocky Mount State Historic Site has been kept alive by dedicated volunteers for over 50 years. From maintaining our heritage gardens to bringing the 18th century to life through demonstrations and storytelling, our volunteers are the heartbeat of this National Historic Landmark.

🎭 Historical Interpretation

Bring the 18th century to life

Transport visitors back to 1790 through storytelling, demonstrations, and first-person interpretation. Wear period clothing, demonstrate colonial crafts, and share the daily life of Tennessee's early settlers.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead tours through the historic mansion

  • Demonstrate traditional crafts like blacksmithing, weaving, or hearth cooking

  • Portray historical characters during special events

Preserve our historic landscape

Care for 60+ acres of historic buildings, heritage gardens, and natural areas. Your hands-on work directly preserves this irreplaceable piece of Tennessee history.

What You'll Do:

  • Maintain period-appropriate gardens and landscapes

  • Cultivate heritage plants and heirloom varieties

  • Clear and maintain walking trails

  • Assist with building and fence repairs

  • Care for historical tools and equipment

  • Support archaeological and restoration projects

  • Help with general site upkeep and beautification
